flag Bhutan Bhutan: Trade Profile

Foreign Trade in Figures

Bhutan, which is open to foreign trade, has committed itself to a sub-regional economic cooperation process. Trade relations with India, its main partner, were reinforced and a bilateral agreement was signed with Bangladesh. The country is a member of several regional organizations and a candidate to join the WTO.

Since 2008, Bhutan has had a trade balance surplus, a situation which should continue in the coming years. The country exports essentially electricity, cardamon, gypsum, wood, craft goods, cement, fruits, precious stones and spices to India, and to a lesser extent Italy and Japan. Bhutan imports fuels, cereals, aircrafts, machinery, vehicles, textile and rice from India, Japan and China.
