flag Bolivia Bolivia: Trade Profile

Foreign Trade in Figures

Bolivia is open to foreign trade, of which it is dependent; however, corruption and other structural problems harm trade. Still, the global competitiveness index of the World Economic Forum emphasizes its constant improvement in the classification.

Bolivia's trade with neighboring countries is growing, partly because of several regional preferential trade agreements. Bolivia is a member of the Andean Community (Peru, Ecuador and Colombia) and is an associate member of Mercosur (Southern America Common Market). The Andean Trade Promotion and Drug Eradication Act (ATPDEA) has allowed numerous Bolivian products to enter the American market duty-free. Bolivia is also a member of the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), whose main objective is the establishment of a common market, aimed at the economic and social development of the region.

In 2010, Bolivia recorded a trade surplus, despite a fall in the prices of raw materials. The profits of trade with the USA hav e been suspended.

Bolivia mainly exports natural gas, soya, crude oil and mineral products to Brazil, the United States and Japan. The main import products are petroleum products, platstic, paper, cooked foods, cars and insecticides from Brazil, Argentina, the United States, Chile, Peru and China.
