flag Chad Chad: Economic Outline

Economic Indicators

The economy of Chad was already fragile when it was strongly affected by the international global crisis, the drop in oil prices provoked a strong deterioration of the payment balances and the budget condition.  Under the effect of the strong decline of its agricultural production, the GDP shrank in 2009 (-1.6%). With the revival of the global demand, the GDP's growth became positive again in 2010, attaining 4.3%.

Chad adopted a new National Strategy for Poverty Reduction with the IMF (NSPR II), establishing a program of structural reforms for the 2008-2011 period. The emphasis is placed on fiscal sustainability, proper control of public finances and reasonable spending of oil revenues to promote economic diversification and reduce poverty. Chad has initiated a process of privatization in order to improve the overall of its economy.

Chad is one of the poorest countries in the world. Life expectancy at birth is only 51 years, malnutrition affects a third of the children under 5 years of age and the level of education is low.
