flag Fiji Islands Fiji Islands: Trade Profile

Foreign Trade in Figures

Foreign commerce represented more than 100% of the GDP in 2009. Considering that trade is very much controlled by the government, customs duties are relatively low. However, non-tariff barriers such as the restrictions on import licenses, several different import taxes and tax incentives offered to local exporters are not favorable to a healthy trade environment.

The inflation rate is relatively low (around 3.1%) which provides a positive environment. Nevertheless, the government has a direct influence on prices through the state-owned utilities.

The country imports much more than what it exports, which results in a substantial trade deficit that should keep on during the next following years.

Fiji's main trading partners are Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
