Fiji Islands: Investing
The FDI inflows into Fiji have been improving during the last few years; however, due to the impact of the financial crisis in Australia and Singapore, Fiji Islands have been receiving less FDI.
Foreign investment in Fiji Islands is very controlled. Most of the transfers (including capital transfers) are subject to approval and limitations by the government. The government's policy, which grants tax concessions to multinational companies investing in Fiji, has not been properly applied. The acquisition of local companies by foreigners, though it is authorized, is not encouraged, foreign ownership of real estate must follow very complex procedures.
The tourism sector attracts the majority of investment. However, according to country’s 20-year development plan (2002 -2022), the sectors of bio-fuels, fishing, food processing, forestry (pine trees) and cattle farming must benefit the most. Australia, Singapore and Japan are the main investing countries.
