flag Ghana Ghana: Trade Profile

Foreign Trade in Figures

Ghana is very open to trade, and business accounts for 125% of the GDP. Similar to the way liberalization has boosted economic growth, the economic policy led by the government aims to create an economic environment that facilitates private sector development, which guarantees a transparent trade regime and the country's competitiveness on the international market. Ghana is a member of the WTO, ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) and has signed several bilateral partnership agreements.

Customs duties are not very high, but are levied on all imports products. Certain goods like mercuric medicated soap, toxic waste or contaminated goods are prohibited.

Ghana has a chronic trade deficit that keeps worsening due to a faster increase in imports than exports.

Ghana mainly exports precious ores and stones (gold, bauxite, aluminium, manganese and diamonds), cocoa, wood, fish and horticultural products to the Netherlands, the Ukraine, the United Kingdom, France and the United States. It mainly imports equipment goods, oil and foodstuffs from China, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, India, the United States, France and the United Kingdom.
